Description
The HC-05 Bluetooth Module is a drop-in wireless replacement for serial (UART) communication. It acts as a transparent bridge that swaps out your USB or wired serial link without requiring any changes to your existing code — plug it in, pair it, and your project talks over Bluetooth instead of a cable. That makes it a natural fit for smartphone-controlled RC cars, remote weather stations, wireless debugging, and light industrial telemetry.
Every module is quality-checked before it ships to confirm the Master/Slave firmware responds correctly to AT commands and holds a stable connection at its rated range, so you’re not stuck troubleshooting a bad clone mid-project. It ships on a breakout board with an onboard 3.3V regulator and clearly labeled pins, which helps avoid the most common HC-05 mistake: feeding 5V logic straight into the RXD pin. The module accepts a wide 3.6V–6V supply, but its data lines run at 3.3V logic, so a level shifter (or simple voltage divider) is required when pairing it with 5V boards like an Arduino Uno.

Key Applications
Getting Started
If you’re already comfortable with basic UART communication over a USB-to-TTL converter, this module is the natural next step into wireless. It lets you control a project from across a room or place sensors somewhere a cable simply can’t reach. Setup is intermediate-level — a basic grasp of AT commands is enough to configure the name, pairing code, and baud rate.
Wiring & Safety
⚠ VCC takes 5V, but the RXD pin needs 3.3V logic — use a voltage divider or logic-level converter between a 5V Arduino’s TX pin and the module’s RXD pin.
| Pin | Function |
|---|---|
| VCC | 5V input |
| GND | Ground |
| TXD | Connect to MCU RX |
| RXD | Connect to MCU TX (via 3.3V level shifter) |
| STATE | HIGH when connected, LOW when disconnected |
| EN/KEY | Pull HIGH to enter AT Command Mode |

Frequently Asked Questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What’s the default pairing code? | Usually 1234 or 0000. |
| Can it act as a Master? | Yes — the HC-05 can both initiate and receive connections. |
| How do I rename it? | Send AT+NAME=YourName in AT Command Mode. |
| Default baud rate? | 9600bps for normal communication, 38400bps in AT mode. |
| Does it work with an iPhone? | No — HC-05 (Bluetooth 2.0/SPP) isn’t iOS-compatible. Use a BLE module like the HM-10 instead. |
| LED blinking fast? | It’s searching for a pairing. |
| LED blinking slowly (every 2s)? | It’s in AT Command Mode. |
| Is it 5V tolerant? | Power input is 5V-safe, but the data pins are strictly 3.3V. |
| Does it need a level shifter with ESP32? | No — ESP32 is natively 3.3V. |
| Maximum range? | Around 10m in open air. |
| How many devices can connect at once? | Point-to-point only (one-to-one). |
| Can it transfer files? | No — it’s designed for low-speed serial data, not file transfer. |
| How do I enter AT mode? | Hold the onboard button while powering on, or pull EN/KEY HIGH. |
| Won’t pair with my laptop? | Update your Bluetooth drivers and confirm the module isn’t already paired elsewhere. |
| Does it support audio? | No — SPP serial data only. |
| Can I change the PIN? | Yes — AT+PSWD="XXXX". |
| Works with Raspberry Pi? | Yes, via the GPIO UART pins. |
| HC-05 vs HC-06? | HC-05 supports Master and Slave; HC-06 is Slave-only. |
| Built-in antenna? | Yes — an onboard PCB trace antenna. |
